help us to lose weight?

Let’s face it there are literally hundreds of different weight loss and diet programs on the market, with dozens more springing up every month. It is big business for the companies that sell the related products and an industry that grows all the time.

Trying to lose weight or going on a diet usually involves short-term weight loss but very rarely does the weight stay off. This is because diets do not work. To lose weight and to keep the weight off, we must change our eating and exercise habits.

This is why drinking apple cider vinegar to lose weight actually appeals to me. Although there is little scientific evidence to substantiate these claims, it is believed that drinking a glass of water with mixed with some ACV before or during every meal has certain beneficial effects:

1. The nutrients, enzymes and organic acids in apple cider vinegar acts as a natural appetite suppressant, so you feel fuller much quicker.
Apples and AVC contain pectin which is a water-soluble fiber. It is effective in absorbing water and filling the stomach slightly. So drinking a glass before your meal should give you that fuller feeling inside so you don’t eat as much.

This theory has actually been tested at Lund University by Swedish scientists studying vinegar as an appetite suppressant. It was concluded that vinegar drunk before a meal, encourages people to eat less.

Reference: European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2005, 59: 983-988

2. Mixing apple cider vinegar with a glass of water will help to cure your cravings for sweet things. This is particularly beneficial to those of us who like our puddings and ice cream! This theory certainly works for me. I always enjoyed a sweet dessert after a main meal, but if I drink a ACV solution I can quite happily skip it, which in itself has helped me to lose a few pounds.

3. The healthy byproducts contained in AVC also help your metabolism work more efficiently, thus speeding up the rate at which your body burns fat.

The acetic acid in the vinegar releases iron from the foods you eat which in turn is absorbed into the body. Without getting too technical, this process utilizes greater amounts of oxygen which requires greater amounts of energy to be used and therefore induces weight loss.

Apple cider vinegar doesn’t directly enable you to lose weight, but its healthy properties helps the body do so naturally without actually changing your diet.

Of course eating a healthier diet and taking more exercise will also help, but you can see how this method at least might stop you from eating too much and encourage the body to work more efficiently, burning unused fat.

The important thing to realize with apple cider vinegar and weight loss is that it is an easily sustainable, long-term method that requires very little effort. It is also a natural product that contains a whole host of vitamins and minerals that can help with various ailments and general health and well-being.

What Is Apple Cider Vinegar?

First off, apple cider vinegar is also known as cider vinegar, ACV and acetic acid.

It is believed to have been used as a health promoting product for hundreds of years with dozens of documented cases since the Roman times. Only recently has its popularity resulted in manufacturers making and supplying it for sale.

Hopefully, as its popularity increases, so will the amount of independent studies into proving one way or the other how it may benefit or treat certain ailments.

Apple cider vinegar is simply vinegar made from pulverized apples through the process of fermentation.

The fermentation undergoes a two stage process. First of all the natural sugar from the apple juice is turned into alcohol. This is known as the yeast fermentation and is the process of making alcoholic cider.

A second fermentation is required to change the alcohol to vinegar, which involves letting oxygen interact with the cider, turning the alcohol into acetic acid. This process is known as acetic acid fermentation.

Importantly this is a completely natural process and the nutrients from the apples are not only retained, they are fortified with additional acids and enzymes produced during the 2 stages of fermentation.

This may explain why the resulting apple cider vinegar reaps health benefits in so many areas of our body’s functions.

Why Is Apple Cider Vinegar So Healthy?

Apples have always been known as a super powerful food which contain lots of healthy vitamins, minerals and are particularly rich in potassium and antioxidants. We’ve all heard the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. They are a recommended source of daily food that helps us stay healthy.

So it is understandable that the vinegar these apples produce using the double fermentation process, contain lots of health promoting properties.

There are claims that apple cider vinegar can be used as an acne treatment, manage weight loss, cure kidney stones, make your teeth whiter, lower cholesterol levels, help with a number of allergies and much more.

How much this is true is debatable and it seems quite often unproven. But as I believe and recommend to others, health benefits of natural products are far more preferential to man made drugs. But like these drugs, not all natural products may work in the same way for every individual. One person’s condition may react differently to another.

It is virtually impossible to say that drinking apple cider vinegar for example, will help lower your cholesterol levels just because someone else who has started to drink it has seen a noticeable benefit to them.

All I would say is that it is worth trying to treat a problem with a natural product first, especially if a large amount of people are all witnessing similar results.

I don’t know about you, but my logic inclines me to think that with all the vitamins and minerals found in apples, it makes sense that a vinegar version, produced from healthy, organic apples, via a double fermentation process, might actually be pretty darn good for me!

What do you think? I would love to hear your comments below.

Here’s a quick video that talks about the benefits of apple cider vinegar:

Welcome to VinegarHealthBenefits.org

My aim is to provide you with useful information and resources regarding the health benefits of vinegar and sort out the facts from the myths.

Like a lot of people, I was already pre-conditioned to believe vinegar would be responsible for a multitude of remedies and cures for our overall health. So I wanted to find out, exactly what it is good for and how many of these claims are merely old wives tales.

First of all there are lots of different varieties of vinegar, including, red wine vinegar, rice vinegar, malt vinegar and apple cider vinegar. All have there own virtues. But I am primarily concerned with the health benefits of apple cider vinegar and that is the vinegar I will be referring to.

Vinegar has a perceived idea of being a miracle cure for a number of ailments including diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis and even as an anti-aging solution. Obviously these claims are wildly exaggerated and not backed up by any evidence or medical findings.

But despite the exaggerated hype behind vinegar health benefits, it can help your overall health in a number of ways. Primarily, vinegar is high in acetic acid. Acetic acid is scientifically proven to help with the digestive system by improving the body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients from the foods we eat that would otherwise be lost.

Women in particular are susceptible to osteoporosis due to an inability to absorb enough calcium needed for the bones. While calcium can be found in abundance in dairy products, anyone with a dairy intolerance i.e lactose intolerance, need to get their calcium form other sources such as green leafy foods. A drop of vinegar goes a long way to help with the absorption of the calcium found in these alternative foods.

So by including apple cider vinegar in meals or even drinking a mild mix of vinegar and water (up to a tablespoon in a glass of water) just before or with meals may well improve your body’s ability to absorb the essential minerals locked in foods.

It is down to the absorption of these minerals that help us fight against the likes of cancer, osteoporosis and diabetes. So indirectly, vinegar can contribute to our health in these areas by allowing our body’s to function better.

It makes sense now, why vinegar has been perceived as such a wonder product, because indirectly it is!

Type 2 diabetes sufferers have been shown to respond to vinegar taken with their meal. The vinegar has a controlling effect on the amount of sugar the body absorbs, which helps maintain the body’s insulin levels.

Slowing sugar absorption gives the insulin-resistant body more time to pull sugar out of the blood and thus helps prevent the blood sugar level from rising so high.

Vinegar is by no means a cure for diabetes and the study was on a small number of participants, but you can understand how it helps in a small way.

Another health benefit of vinegar includes lowering your cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Too much sodium and saturated fats have been shown to have a detrimental effect on blood cholesterol levels, and developing high blood pressure. Vinegar has only 25 calories per half cup and by using it as a simple and tasty substitute for less healthy ingredients like mayonnaise and tartar sauce, can help people ward off potential heart disease and strokes. Again, not a cure, but certainly a healthier alternative.

I personally use vinegar with my cooking and add it to salads. It gives an added dimension and taste to many meals and I love the fact that it’s so low in calories and fat. Like any food source, I wouldn’t recommend you consume copious amounts; after all it is an acid. You can purchase it from most health stores or online at like places Amazon.com.

If you have any stories about vinegar, no matter what sort, it would be good to hear from you. Simply drop your comments below.

Warmest regards,
